Rumer Godden (1907-1988)
Full name Margaret Rumer Godden. A highly regarded British author of both adult and children's books. (She received an OBE for her literary achievement.) She is perhaps best known for her novel The Black Narcissus which was made into a hit film starring Deborah Kerr in the 1940s .
Born in Eastbourne in 1907. Started writing poetry, and then moved onto novels, of which she wrote over 60. She lived in both England and India and her books reflect both these places. Although she has not written any traditional pony stories, a few of her books have horse or pony related plots. Three of these are children's books and one is an adult novel about horse racing in India.
In later life she became interested in the Roman Catholic religion and many of her works deal with the role of woman in religious communities, especially nuns. (Nuns even appear in her horse stories!) As well as Black Narcissus, many of her works were made into films or TV dramas. Amongst the pony mad set, the TV series she will be best remembered for is Kizzy which was about a gypsy girl and her horse and based on the novel The Diddakoi (more about this below).
